About Fire Sprinklers

Ready when you're not!

Protect what you value most! Fire destroys everything in its path, that includes you, your family, your home, your business, your school, your community. Fire does not discriminate, you may have less than 5 minutes to escape.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service and Cornwall Council strongly encourages the fitting of fire sprinklers in all types of buildings at the design stage, the fitting of sprinklers can often lead to compensations being given in other areas of fire safety design such as a requirement for fire doors, insurance companies will also give reductions on premiums giving year on year savings which can often pay for the sprinkler installation within several years.

Residential Fire Sprinklers

Why wait for the fire and rescue service to arrive, it may be too late to save what you value most.

Sprinklers can save lives

Cornwall Fire, Rescue and Community Safety (CFRCS) Service have held a special demonstration at their headquarters in Tolvaddon to urge local MPs to consider the benefits and impact of having sprinklers in Schools.

A number of MPs, Councillors, and project leads were invited to attend the presentation and sprinkler demonstration delivered by the Business Fire Safety (Protection) team of CFRCS Service. Attendees also enjoyed an informative tour of CFRCS Service’s new headquarters, which is protected by a sprinkler system.

Facts

  • Automatic sprinkler systems have enjoyed an enviable record of protecting life and property for over 150 years.
  • Fire sprinklers are widely recognized as the single most effective method for fighting the spread of fires in their early stages.
  • Sprinklers protect the lives of firefighters and are fully supported by fire services.
  • The installation of fire sprinklers could virtually eliminate fire deaths.
  • Sprinklers reduce injuries by at least 80%, reduce property damage by 90% and substantially reduce damage to the environment from fire.
  • More than 70 million sprinkler heads are installed worldwide each year.

Myths

  • When there is a fire all the sprinkler heads go off at once. Wrong. Each head is independent and only the head(s) adjacent to the fire goes off.
  • Water damage is as bad as the fire damage. Wrong. A Typical sprinkler discharges 55 litres per minute. A firefighting hose discharges over 600 litres per minute.
  • A smoke detector provides enough protection. Fact: Smoke detectors save lives by providing a warning system but can do nothing to extinguish a growing fire or protect those physically unable to escape on their own. Too often, battery-operated smoke detectors fail to function because the batteries are dead or have been removed.
  • Sprinkler Systems are expensive. Wrong. It is estimated that the costs of a sprinkler system can be recovered over a period of about 10 years. This is achieved through reduced insurance premiums and in larger organisations through less disruption to business continuity when a fire occurs.
  • I have smoke alarms so I don’t need fire sprinklers. Fact: Smoke alarms are essential in every home. But they can only detect a fire. Fire sprinklers detect the fire and automatically control it, saving lives and property.
  • Sprinklers can go off accidentally. Wrong. Records show that the chance of an accidental discharge from a sprinkler is very rare.
